Photuris er en slekt av lysbiller. Disse insektene har fått sitt navn ettersom de er istand til å frambringe lys.
Utseende
Middelsstore, avlange, gjerne brunlige lysbiller. Hos denne gruppen har vanligvis også hunnene fullstendige vinger og store fasettøyne.
Levevis
Lysbillene er nattaktive insekter. De finnes i mange ulike naturtyper (habitat), som fuktige enger, langs skogsbryn, bekker, i hager og parker. De finnes i lavlandet, men kan også finnes oppover i fjellet, men ikke over skog-grensen. Larvene til sankthansormen, som lever i Norge, spiser skallbærende snegler, som de dreper med et giftig bitt. De sprøyter så inn fordøyelsesenzymer som langsomt løser opp sneglen, og slurper i seg innholdet. De kan leve ganske lenge på en snegle.
De spesielle lysproduserende organene er plassert på bakkroppen. Larvene lyser nok som en advarsel til rovdyr om at de kan inneholde giftige kjemikalier. Men for de voksne er det ofte hunnen som sender ut lysblink. Hun er vingeløs, sitter i vegetasjonen og gjør det for å tiltrekke seg partnere.
Hunnene kryper opp i vegetasjonen like før det blir mørkt. De velger gjerne en åpen plass slik at lyset kan ses på lang avstand. Hannene som flyr lavt over vegetasjonen, straks de oppfatter hunnes lyssignal, flyr de til henne. I tropiske strøk er det mange ulike arter og de har utviklet egne lyssignaler (blinking) for å kunne kjenne igjen individer fra samme art. Hunner i slekten Photuris etterligner lyssignalene til hunner i slekten Photinus og tilrekker seg dermed hanner fra denne slekten, men hannene blir så spist. Disse hunnene blir derfor gjerne referert til som "femme fatale fireflies".
Utbredelse
Gruppen er utbredt i den Nye verden.
