I Must Have That Man (il faut que j'ai cet homme, en anglais) est une chanson d'amour standard de jazz américain, écrite par Jimmy McHugh et Dorothy Fields, et composée par Duke Ellington en 1928^[1]^,^[2].

Historique

Duke Ellington (1899-1974) commence sa carrière de jazz avec succès avec son « big band Washingtonians » dans sa ville natale de Washington DC, puis dirige avec succès le célèbre Cotton Club de Harlem à New York, ou il se produit à plein temps avec son big band qu'il rebaptise Cotton Club Orchestra, du 4 décembre 1927 au 30 juin 1931 (ou il devient une des stars internationales de l'Ère du Jazz grâce à la composition d'une importante série de tubes retransmis sur les radios américaines, et mondiales).

Il compose cette chanson d'amour (avec son tube Diga Diga Doo, écrites par Jimmy McHugh et Dorothy Fields) pour la comédie musicale Blackbirds, avec laquelle la célèbre chanteuse de jazz vocal de l'époque Adelaïde Hall fait un triomphe international à Broadway de Manhattan à New York en 1928, puis au Moulin-Rouge à Paris. Il enregistre ce tube le 15 novembre 1928 avec son Cotton Club Orchestra, composé de Bubber Miley, Arthur Whetsol, Freddie Jenkins, Joe Nanton, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Barney Bigard, Fred Guy, Sonny Greer, Wellman Braud, avec ses célèbres « effets Ellington », arrangements « style Jungle » exotiques inspirés du Jazz Nouvelle-Orléans-Dixieland, et effets wha-wha de sourdines de ses deux trompettistes Bubber Miley et Joe Nanton^[3]. Cette célèbre composition est rééditée de nombreuses fois, et reprise par de nombreuses stars de l'histoire du jazz, dont Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young, Django Reinhardt, ou Liza Minnelli...
