Salento is a town and comune in the Cilento area, province of Salerno, in the Campania region of south-western Italy.

History

In ancient times the town was called "Sala di Gioi" (a second small centre, "Salella di Gioi", adjacent to Sala di Gioi remained uninhabited with the plague of 1656) and was a small agricultural hamlet of the Lombard dependency of the State of Gioi. Until the 8th Century, the center had a sparse population, only with the settlements of Italian-Greek monks, with the consequent agricultural colonization of vast areas of the municipal countryside, there will be real urban growth.

Culture

Salento Cilento become known as "The Poetry Village" (in Italian: "Il Paese della Poesia")[3] founded by the Italian poet Menotti Lerro in 2018 after he established there the Cilento Poetry Prize financed by Italian Ministry of Culture for 140.500 Euro in 2022 to let the Prize become International.[4] "The Poetry Village" is characterized for the ceramic tiles with unpublished poems dedicated to the Cilento territory written as present from all the winners of the Cilento International Poetry Prize.[5] On August 2024 the former Mayor Gabriele De Marco was appointed as "Custode della Piramide" (In English: "Guardian of the Pyramid") by Menotti Lerro in an official cerimony held in Orria.[6][7]
